How to Save Dying Indoor Plants: Overwatering, Yellow Leaves & Sunburn Fixes

We have all been there. You buy a gorgeous, lush indoor plant from the nursery, bring it home, name it "Chintu", and promise to love and cherish it forever. Two weeks later, Chintu is looking like he just went through a terrible breakup—yellow leaves dropping everywhere and stems looking mushy. 😂
Do not throw the pot out just yet! Plants are incredibly resilient. Whether you are an over-enthusiastic plant parent who waters them every time you drink a glass of water, or you completely forgot they existed until today, there is hope! 🪴
Let's diagnose exactly what is going wrong with your green buddies and how to bring them back from the brink of disaster.
Diagnosing and fixing common indoor plant problems to bring them back to life.
1. Yellowing, Mushy Leaves (The Overwatering Trap) 💦
In India, we show love by feeding our guests until they burst, and unfortunately, we do the same with our plants! Overwatering is the number one killer of indoor plants.
- The Symptoms: Leaves turn pale yellow, feel soft and mushy, and drop off easily. The soil smells swampy.
- The Diagnosis: Root rot. The roots are drowning and cannot breathe.
- The Fix: Stop watering immediately! Take the plant out of the pot, snip away any black, slimy roots, and repot it in fresh, dry soil with plenty of perlite or coco peat for drainage. Always check the top two inches of soil with your finger—if it is wet, do not water!
2. Crispy Brown Edges (Sunburn or Underwatering) 🏜️
Did you leave your shade-loving plant right next to a west-facing window in the middle of a blazing Indian summer? Yep, that is a sunburn.
- The Symptoms: The tips and edges of the leaves turn dry, crispy, and brown.
- The Diagnosis: Too much direct sunlight (sunburn) or you forgot to water it for three weeks.
- The Fix: Move the plant a few feet away from the direct sun or use a sheer curtain to filter the light. Snip off the crispy dead edges (leave a tiny brown margin so you don't cut into healthy tissue) and give the soil a thorough, deep watering until it drains out the bottom.
3. White Fluffy Stuff (Mealybug Pest Attack) 🐛
You look closely at the stems and see what looks like tiny bits of cotton candy. Spoiler alert: It is not candy. It is a mealybug invasion!
- The Symptoms: White, cotton-like masses in the joints of leaves and stems. The plant looks weak and sticky.
- The Fix: Isolate the plant immediately so the bugs don't spread. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol (surgical spirit) and wipe the bugs off. Then, spray the entire plant with a mixture of Neem oil and a few drops of mild liquid soap. Repeat this every week until they are gone.
